Within the framework of the European institutional system and applicable policies (especially, the EU cohesion policy and "Europe 2020" strategy), regional and local authorities represent a significant resource and a significant opportunity for the Union and member States.

The new regional areas are trans-national macroregions with a territorial, functional, network-based nature and «variable geometry», which the Union aims to manage with the objective of promoting the overcoming of local disparities, by way of actions at various levels, including the availability of infrastructure, energy networks, transport etc. This new form of European regionalism could open new ways to implement policies focusing on producing public assets at European level (environment, sustainable development, human capital, etc.) in effective and legitimate formats.

Within this framework, the project approach developed by Globus et Locus focuses on investigating the role of regional areas, in the context of new European and more generally global governance methods.

More specifically, Globus et Locus’ commitment in this regard was put into effect with the following activities that it has undertaken.

26 May 2020 - 2021: ESPON IMAGINE "Developing a metropolitan-regional imaginary in the Milan-Bologna urban region" Targeted Analysis coordinated by Politecnico di Milano in partnership with Globus et Locus and Sciences Po.

This would start from member institutions, and the strengthening of alliances with institutional and non-institutional bodies, with whom discussions and relations have already been established regarding these issues.
