The Italics Project

The term Italics indicates a global community of roughly 250 million people scattered throughout the world who are gaining new meaning and potential through globalization. These populations are to a certain degree post-national, with multiple identities, loyalties and citizenships; their transnational networks interconnect continents and countries through the territories and their increasingly porous borders.

We set up Italicity Community on Facebook, aiming at at aggregating the Italics on the web in a bottom-up approach.

In the process of globalisation, the phenomena of mobility – of things, individuals and “signs” (information, ideas, values) – are the main drivers of innovation and development and it is upon these that the fate of the nations involved in world wide competition increasingly depends.

It is for this reason that the theme of mobility of highly qualified human resources, especially in the fields of research in science and technology, has come to occupy a central role in the study and operations of Globus et Locus.

The concept of Italic identity

The terms “Italics” and “Italicity” indicate a type of identity and loyalty that is not national, ethnic-linguistic (people of Italian origin who speak the Italian language) and juridical-institutional (people with Italian citizenship), but rather, it is essentially cultural. To us, Italics are not just the Italian citizens living in Italy or abroad, but most of all the descendents of Italians, Italian speakers and Italophiles, people from the Ticino Swiss canton, Dalmatian coast and San Marino Republic, and their descendants in Europe, Canada, the U.S., Latin America, Australia and elsewhere around the world. All together, they represent a global community of roughly 250 million people scattered throughout the world and they are gaining new meaning and potential through globalization. These populations are to a certain degree post-national, with multiple identities, loyalties and citizenships; their transnational networks interconnect continents and countries through the territories and their increasingly porous borders.

The Project

During these years, Globus et Locus has been committed to catalyze the aggregation of the Italic civilisation in a bottom-up approach, through the creation of privileged channels of communication, in order to help Italics to raise awarenessof their identity. The Italics Project pursues the following key objectives:

- to analyse the Italic phenomenon and define its sociological, political and economic implications

- to foster the grouping of the extensive and varied Italic community, by using the web as a “virtual forum” for interconnecting the functional networks of Italics that cross the globalised world under the banner “Italics of the world let’s get together!”

- to promote a reference network initiative for all those (foundations, regions, local authorities, chambers of commerce, universities, enterprises, etc.) who work to develop local areas and communities. Their activities necessarily intersect “emigrant communities” (Lombards, Venetians, Piedmontese throughout the world, etc.).

- to promote meetings, collaborative relationships and planning and operational synergies among the key actors of the “Italic community” and business community

Since December 2009, Centro AltreItalie, the Center for the study of Italian Migrations directed by Maddalena Tirabassi, has been transferred to Globus et Locus by the Agnelli Foundation. This new partnership aims at studying the question of the new glocal civilizations in light of their attained mobility and of the new relationship between territory and functions.
